REASONS FOR TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR VS SOUTHAMPTON PREDICTIONS
- Tottenham have scored in 14 of their 17 competitive home games this season.
- Southampton have seen both teams score in eight of their last 11 away games in all competitions.
- Spurs have won eight of their last nine home games against Southampton in all competitions.
- Three of Tottenham’s last five home games have ended 2-1.
Smash and grab boosts Tottenham confidence
Despite being outplayed for much of the game, Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham side picked up a morale boosting victory on Sunday as they performed the ultimate smash and grab against Manchester City.
This lifts Spurs up to 5th in the table and puts them firmly in the race for the top four, but on Wednesday their attentions turn towards the FA Cup. An 87th minute equaliser from Sofiane Boufal saw this tie with Southampton taken to a replay, and with a weekend off Premier League action both sides will have the opportunity to field a strong team.
Spurs aren’t exactly putting on the best footballing displays under Mourinho, but the results have slowly started to return. They are now unbeaten in five competitive games, including victory in all three of their home games in this period.
Anfield defeat belies Saints’ improvement
Southampton are actually turning out to be a very good team at the moment though. They may have lost comprehensively at Anfield on Saturday, but they have pushed themselves up to 13th in the table and currently sit just six points adrift of Spurs.
Only two of the Saints’ last 10 games have ended in defeat, and they have found the net in nine of these 10 outings. This newfound attacking threat under Ralph Hasenhuttl has been the main driving force behind their resurrection, and it’s something Spurs will need to watch carefully.
Attackers set for productive evening on Wednesday
Indeed, the hosts have kept just two clean sheets in their last 10 home games in all competitions, and one of those was that unlikely victory against Man City on Sunday. Guardiola’s men had 19 attempts on goal in that match, so it was hardly a defensive masterclass from the hosts.
Spurs have, however, scored in 14 of their 17 home games this season, and they’re facing a Saints side that have conceded in nine of their last 11 games on the road. With both teams scoring in eight of these 11 games, backing that to happen again on Wednesday looks good value for money.
In the end we expect Tottenham to come out on top. They have won seven of their last nine home games and have won eight of their last nine home matches against Southampton. The visitors have conceded 1.64 goals per away game over their last 11 trips, and with three of Spurs’ last five home games ending 2-1 we’re going for that for our correct score prediction.
