ATLETICO MADRID VS LIVERPOOL = OVER 1.5
- Sadio Mane has scored 10 times in his last 14 UCL knockout games.
- Atletico Madrid have won just one of their last seven matches ahead of this clash.
- Liverpool have won 13 of their last 14 matches across all competitions.
- The Reds have secured five wins in their last seven UCL away days.
Reds Return to Madrid
Less than a year after winning the Champions League, Liverpool return to the backdrop of their latest European glory. The Reds head to the Wanda Metropolitano on Tuesday for this first-leg clash with Atletico Madrid, which could set Jurgen Klopp’s men on the road to an incredible double.
Atletico Madrid’s squad has changed alongside their home, with Diego Simeone overseeing a new era of Atleti. However, that hasn’t been a smooth transition, with Atletico struggling to keep up with Real Madrid and Barcelona. Just where will that leave them against the best side in the world?
Shaky Atletico
The hosts are lacking that famous defensive stability which took them to the final of this competition in 2014 and 2016. Simeone needs time to restore his grit to this side while blending it with the likes of Joao Felix and Yannick Carrasco. However, that presents a problem against this excellent Liverpool attack.
The Reds scored 29 times in this competition in 2019, thanks to their brilliant frontline. Sadio ManĂ© has scored 10 goals in 14 Champions League knockout games since 2017/18; only Cristiano Ronaldo has been more prolific over that period (11 goals). ManĂ© made a goalscoring return against Norwich at the weekend (from the bench), while we’re backing him to make a big impact here.
Reds a Cut Above
The gulf appearing between Europe’s very best and the rest is obvious. While Klopp has put Liverpool on that level, Atletico Madrid have slipped. This isn’t the tough away test it once was, with Atletico winning just once in seven games – a narrow 1-0 success over Granada.
Liverpool have won 13 of their last 14 matches, claiming six wins from their last eight in the Champions League. The Reds have also won five of their last seven trips in this competition, while they won 2-0 here in the final back in May.
